PURPOSE: A 3D image generating apparatus and a method thereof using the extension of a depth map object for applying a discontinuity maintenance smoothing filter are provided to maintain an object of an original image and to increase 3D imaging effects. CONSTITUTION: A MAX filtering unit(102) deeply applies a contour maintenance filter to multiply the depth value of an object. A rendering unit(103) renders a 2D color image and a filtered depth image. The rendering unit generates a 3D image through rendering. A discontinuity maintenance smoothing filtering unit(101) applies a discontinuity maintenance smoothing filter to maintain discontinuity in the boundary of the object.
