The method involves allowing an engine i.e. drive engine (1) or internal combustion engine, to provide torque that is provided to a transmission by a controlled friction element. An acceleration tuning is performed for accelerating speed of the engine. Another acceleration tuning is performed for accelerating speed of the friction element so as to bring the speed of the friction element to be closer to the engine speed. The friction element is closed, and a set point of torque is sent to the engine and to the friction element to control the engine speed and the friction element speed. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a drive train of a motor vehicle.
