Disclosed is an oxide containing terbium oxide, which has a large Verdet constant in a wavelength range around 1.06 µm (0.9-1.1 µm) and high transparency. Also disclosed is a small-sized magneto-optical device which is suitable for use in a fiber laser for a processing machine. The oxide is characterized by containing an oxide represented by formula (I) as a main component, and having a Verdet constant of not less than 0.18 min/(Oe·cm) at a wavelength of 1.06 µm and a transmittance of not less than 70% for an optical path length of 3 mm at a wavelength of 1.06 µm.
