PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tuning fork oscillator allowing efficient vapor-deposition of a metal transpiring from an additional metal film onto an oscillating arm by laser irradiation and, in particular, suppressing an electric short of an excitation electrode. SOLUTION: The surface mounting type quartz oscillator is equipped with: a container body having a recessed part; a tuning-fork-like crystal piece 3 disposed in the recessed part in the container body and having a plurality of oscillating arms 6 extending from a tuning fork base part 5; and a translucent lid 4 joined with an opening end of the container body to hermetically encapsulate the tuning-fork-like crystal piece 3. The additional metal film 11 is formed on one main surface of the lid 4 facing the tuning-fork-like crystal piece 3 and/or in a region facing the oscillating arms 6 on an inner bottom surface of the container main boy. The additional metal film 11 is formed on one main surface of the lid 4 and/or in a recessed part for the metal film (an inner peripheral part of a frame part 16 for the metal film) formed in the inner bottom surface of the container body.
