PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving device and a driving method of a movable body, capable of holding a position of the movable body without supplying energy to an actuator, by using a shape memory polymer. SOLUTION: Position holding devices 40 and 50 have a cylindrical polymer 110 and an engaging part 142. The cylindrical polymer 110 is formed in a cylindrical shape by the shape memory polymer of becoming a rubber state at the glass transition temperature or more and becoming a glass state in less than the glass transition temperature, and is connected to at least one of a base body 10 and the movable body 20. The engaging part 142 is fixedly arranged to the other of the base body 10 and the movable body 20, and is arranged on the outer peripheral side of the cylindrical polymer 110. After the cylindrical polymer 110 is expanded and deformed so as to increase a cylinder diameter of the cylindrical polymer 110 in the rubber state, the expanded-deformed cylindrical polymer engages with a cylindrical polymer 110 by becoming the glass state.
