The invention relates to an automated system (10) in which a targeted search may be made for connecting terminals without having to actuate a load (50) connected thereto. For this purpose, the automated system (10) has a communication network (60), a programmable control unit (20), and at least one modular bus subscriber (30, 40) which are connected to the communication network (60). The modular bus subscriber (30) has multiple groups (301 . . . 30n) of connecting elements (31, 32), a display element (70 through 105) being associated with each group of connecting elements. An evaluation and control unit is also provided which actuates at least one selected display element (70 through 105) in response to signaling information originating from the programmable control unit (20). The programmable control unit (20) is designed to provide this type of signaling information.
