ADAPTIVE MEASUREMENT OF ROUND-TRIP TIME IN AUTOMATIC RETRANSMISSION REQUEST (ARQ) USING ABORT TIMER STARTED AT RECEIPT OF NEGATIVE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (NAK)

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for efficient communications of data across various protocol layers in an ARQ communication system.

SOLUTION: A base station receives radio link protocol (RLP) packets of data. A processor assembles received RLP packets of data. The processor is configured for determining whether the received RLP packet of data is received out of sequence in a series of RLP packets of data, starting an abort timer associated with a transmitted (NAK) for measuring an elapsed time of the abort timer, determining whether the elapsed time of the abort timer exceeds the abort period of time dynamic threshold that is based on statistical data of periods of time measured for previously received successful retransmissions of RLP packet of data.
