PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an organic electroluminescent element capable of uniformly light-emitting in spite of increase of a light-emitting area; a light pulling-out method; a lighting device; and a display. SOLUTION: A positive electrode 12 and a negative electrode 13 are arranged along the surface of a substrate 11 by respectively separating them, and a light-emitting layer 14B is arranged at a gap G between the electrodes. When applying an electric field F between the positive electrode 12 and the negative electrode 13, light emission is generated by injecting: positive electric charge (+) from the positive electrode 12; and negative electric charge (-) from the negative electrode 13. The applying direction of the external electric field F, namely, the injection directions of the positive electric charge (+) and the negative electric charge (-) become the same (or approximately the same) with the arranged direction A of the positive electrode 12 or the negative electrode 13. Light H generated on the light-emitting layer 14B can be pulled out from a side opposite to the substrate 11 of the light-emitting layer 14B in a direction perpendicular to the arranged direction A of the positive electrode 12 and the negative electrode 13.
