PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a useful material in which the reaction efficiency of a substrate is good, and the operation stability of a production process is improved. SOLUTION: The method for producing the useful material by bringing a hydrophobic substrate into contact with an aqueous reaction liquid 5, and converting the substrate in the reaction liquid by using a biocatalyst includes localizing the hydrophobic substrate in a solid state on one position in the reaction system. Especially, there is provided the method for producing 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2, 5, 5, 8a-tetramethyldecahydronaphthalen-2-ol by using microorganisms of ascomycetes as the biocatalyst.
