A hydrogen generation apparatus which comprises: a reformer (1) that contains a nickel-containing reforming catalyst (1A) and can generate a hydrogen-rich fuel gas using a raw material and water vapor; a temperature detector (12) that detects the temperature of the reforming catalyst (1A); a purge gas supply unit (7) that supplies a purge gas into the reformer (1); and a controller (13). In the apparatus, the controller (13) enables the purge with the purge gas supplied from the purge gas supply unit (7) in the reformer (1) when the temperature detected by the temperature detector (12) reaches a temperature equal to or higher than a first predetermined temperature.
