PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the responsiveness of a variable valve train in a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The variable valve gear includes: a camshaft attached with a cam for driving a valve in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine; a displacement member having a projection and a notch and displaceable in a camshaft direction; a pressing member pressing the displacement member in the camshaft direction; a slide groove spirally formed at the peripheral surface of the camshaft and engaged with the projection in order to displace the displacement member in a direction resisting against the pressing force of the pressing member by the rotation of the camshaft; an actuator pushing out the projection toward the slide groove and having a moving body engaged with the notch when the displacement member is displaced in a direction resisting against the pressing force of the pressing member; a magnetic force generating mechanism generating a magnetic force canceling a part of a force generated between the notch and the moving body; and a valve characteristic changing mechanism changing opening characteristics of a valve accompanied by the relative displacement between the displacement member and the camshaft.
