IDENTIFICATION OF FREE-B-RING FLAVONOID AS POTENT COX-2 INHIBITOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzyme COX-2 for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

SOLUTION: The invention relates to a composition including an extract of a plant belonging to genus Scutellaria, the compositae family. The extract includes a mixture of free-B-ring flavonoids including baicalin. The composition is administered through a route selected from among oral, local, suppository, intravenous and percutaneous administrations in a dosage amount selected from the range of 0.01 to 200 mg/kg of body weight.
