<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively identify a disease part in the fundus of the eye to be examined. <P>SOLUTION: A reference area designation section 242 designates a reference area in a monochromatic gradation image Gi. The reference area includes a blood vessel area and a healthy area. A tolerance setting section 250 generates a reference histogram expressing the distribution of the gradation values of pixels in the reference area, and sets the tolerance of the gradation values on the basis of the reference histogram. A pixel identification section 261 identifies pixels having gradation values outside the tolerance among the pixels in an area to be analyzed in the monochromatic gradation image Gi. A pixel number counting section 262 counts the number of identified pixels. A number-of-pixels information generation section 212 generates number-of-pixels information on the number of counted pixels.
