PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of carrying out operation for abutting and separating an image carrier and a transfer member without using a sensor, even when it has a mechanism carrying out the abutting and separating operation of the image carrier and the transfer member by rotating a cam in one direction. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: the cam 101 for abutting and separating a photoreceptor 1 and a belt 2 by rotating in one direction; a driving means 102 for rotating the cam 101 in one direction; an output means 10 for output of a voltage to the belt; a detection means 104 for detecting a current value flowing between the belt 2 and the photoreceptor 1; a setting means 106 for setting the maximum value of the current value detected by the detection means 104 to be a threshold while the cam 101 is rotated more than one rotation; and a discrimination means 106 for discriminating the abutted and separated states of the photoreceptor belt 1 and the belt 2 by comparing the threshold and the current value that is detected by the detection means 104.
