PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of obtaining correction data which is able to perform effectively shading correction, without causing substantial increase in cost, and to provide an image forming apparatus provided with the image reading apparatus. SOLUTION: An image read part 1 includes a CCD sensor 28 for reading the image of an original by a plurality of light-receiving elements, arrayed in a line shape and a white reference plate 22 provided in order to measure the density of the image. An abnormal input value equal to or lower than a prescribed threshold is determined among input values by a light-receiving element obtained each time the CCD sensor 28 reads the white reference plate 22; and while the input values determined as not being abnormal input values are integrated by the light-receiving element and stored in a first storage means, the input values determined to be the abnormal input values are counted by light-receiving element and stored in a second storage means, and a density reference value to be used for the shading correction is determined, on the basis of the stored contents of the first and the second storage means.
