<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the economic efficiency and silentness of an engine by making selectable between a low fuel consumption mode and a low noise mode, and to prevent noise and output characteristics of the engine from being changed by making manually selectable a continuous regenerating mode and a forced regenerating mode. <P>SOLUTION: The low fuel consumption mode for reducing fuel consumption or the low noise mode for reducing noise is made selectable arbitrarily. Therefore, when the output value P1 of a diesel engine 100 is higher than a predetermined value Ptr, and the deposited amount V1 of the particulate matter collected by a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) 22 is equal to or higher than a predetermined value Vtr, the continuous regenerating mode is selected automatically. When the output value P1 of the diesel engine 100 is lower than the predetermined value Ptr, and the deposited amount V1 of the particulate matter collected by the DPF 22 is equal to or higher than the predetermined value Vtr, the forced regenerating mode is selected automatically.
