<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramics for water retention which has high water retainability, and in which the evaporating properties of water which has been involved is satisfactory, and which has high cooling effect by the evaporation latent heat of water, and to provide a water retaining structure using the ceramics for water retention. <P>SOLUTION: The ceramics 20 for water retention is composed of a sintered porous ceramics, and has a vent hole 21 with an inside diameter of ≥1 mm communicated to the outside. In the whole volume, 53 to 70% is composed of pores with a pore size of 1 to 100 μm. The vent hole may be passed through the pillar axis direction of the ceramics for water retention or may be passed through the horizontal direction.
