Sulphonated aliphatic carbinols are obtained by reducing condensation products of aliphatic ketones or mixtures of such ketones and treating the carbinols thus obtained with usual sulphonating agents. The reduction products from the condensed ketones may be carbinols or mixtures of ketones and carbinols, the former serving as solvents for the sulphonation. The products are suitable as wetting agents &c. According to examples: (1) mesityl oxide, obtainable by splitting off water from diacetone alcohol is reduced with hydrogen in presence of platinum, treated with chlorsulphonic acid and the product employed for mercerising; (2) the same initial product is reduced to methylisobutyl carbinol, which is sulphonated similarly; (3) a condensation product from crude acetone containing mesityl oxide and phorone is hydrogenated and sulphonated to give a similar product; (4) a condensation product from the action of alkali on methyl ethyl ketone is hydrogenated with a palladium catalyst and sulphonated with fuming sulphuric acid and the product neutralized with ethylamine; (5) the condensation product from methyl propylketone is similarly hydrogenated and sulphonated and neutralized as above, the product being of similar application. Diethyl ketone is also specified and sulphur trioxide may be employed also as sulphonating agent.
