A cut away vest (10) consists of a front vest piece (11) having two shoulder sections (12,13) and two waist sections (14,15), and a rear vest piece (21) having two shoulder sections (22,23) and two waist sections (24,25). The front piece (11) is connected to the rear piece (21) by four buckle assemblies (30,40). Each buckle assembly (30,40) has a male portion (30) and a female portion (40), with the male portions (30) being attached to the shoulder and waist sections (12-15) of the front vest piece (11), and the female portions (40) being attached to the shoulder and waist sections (22-25) of the rear vest piece (21), so that the front vest piece (11) is connected to the rear vest piece (21) by inserting each of the male portions (30) into a corresponding female portion (40). Each male buckle portion (30) is connected to a cable (31). The other end of each cable (31) is connected to a single handle (17) on the front vest piece (11). Pulling the handle (17) causes the male portions (30) to release from the female portions (40) and the front vest section (11) to separate from the rear vest section (21).
