The grinder (10) has a grinding tool, and a work piece holder (16) for holding a work piece. A drive device (56) drives the work piece holder in a rotational direction. A coupling device (58) i.e. electromagnetic coupling, provides a rotationally fixed connection between the drive device and work piece holder, where the connection is releasable at a preset limit torque by sliding the coupling device. A controller (60) adjusts the limit torque of the coupling device based on an actual resulting maximum drive torque. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting a surface grinder.
