A light treatment apparatus includes a source of optical radiation controlled by a pulse modulator to generate a train of discrete spaced optical pulses which generate in the skin of a patient a heat pulse envelope of flattened form whereby the temperature of a selected one or more components of the skin remains below a preset temperature without requiring active cooling. The pulse train may comprise a preddefined sequence of multiple closely spaced pulses to raise the temperature to the target level, followed by more widely spaced pulses to maintain the temperature. Alternatively, a heat probe or remote temperature sensor may measure the skin temperature and trigger further pulses when it falls below a threshold. The device may emit a high intensity beam of visible light broader than the treatment pulse to induce blinking should it be directed towards an eye.
|
