PURPOSE: A method for controlling a washing machine is provided to efficiently perform washing by effectively separating foreign materials from laundries. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a washing machine is as follows. Foreign materials attached on laundries are separated by rotating a drum with the laundries(S210). The drum is powered with a first operation mode or a second operation mode. The separated foreign materials are collected in the bottom of the drum(S230). The first operation mode is as follows. The drum is forward or reversely rotated at 170° to 190°. The drum is stopped for a fixed time. The drum is rotated in the same direction.
