Use of chroman-2-carboxylic acid derivative (I) in a process for coloring of human keratin material, is claimed. Use of chroman-2-carboxylic acid derivative of formula (I) in a process for coloring of human keratin material, is claimed. R 1H or 1-12C, preferably 1-6C alkyl, preferably methyl; R 2, R 3, R 4H, 1-4C alkyl, methyl; R 5H (preferred), OH, or -SO 3M; M : H, a cation obtained from alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal, organic amine or ammonium ion; and R 6H (preferred), OH, or 1-4C alkyl. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composition for coloring of human keratin material comprising one or more oxidation dyes and/or one or more direct dye and (I), in a medium; (2) a process for coloring of human keratin material comprising applying the composition on the material; and (3) a multi compartment device comprising a first compartment comprising the composition and the another compartment comprising one or more oxidizing agents.
