<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simultaneous two-photon absorption recording material for performing playback with high sensitivity using a playback laser beam having a wavelength region in the vicinity of 400 to 550 nm by generating a fluorescent dyestuff having a high molar extinction coefficient in the wavelength region, and to provide a two-photon absorption optical recording and playback method and a recording medium using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The simultaneous two-photon absorption recording material contains at least one two-photon absorption compound and at least one fluorescent dyestuff precursor represented by general formula (1). After recording is performed to the recording material by utilizing two-photon absorption of the two-photon absorption compound, recording and playback are performed by irradiating the recording material with the laser beam to detect the difference of fluorescent intensities, the two-photon absorption recording medium is obtained by using the recording material and a multilayer recording medium having recording layers including the recording material is also obtained.
