<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a production cost and power consumption of a liquid crystal display device, using LEDs as a light source by reducing the number of LEDs. <P>SOLUTION: A backlight is constituted of LEDs 30 arranged on a wiring circuit board 40, which are made to correspond to a light guide plate 50 in which light guide blocks 51 are arranged into a matrix form. By making the number of LEDs 30 corresponding to the light guide blocks 51, arranged near the periphery reduced to less than the number of the LEDs 30 that correspond to the light guide plate blocks 51 arranged near the center, the number of the LEDs 30 that the backlight uses is reduced. If the luminance of the periphery of the display panel is 60% or more of luminance of the center of the panel, unevenness of luminance cannot be recognized by human eyes.
