PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing paper edge detection method capable of accurately positioning a printing paper sheet so as to reduce deviation between a printing range and an actual printing range, in a thermal printer using a stepping motor as a paper conveying means. SOLUTION: In the thermal printer using the stepping motor as the paper conveying means, after detecting an edge of the printing paper sheet by a first motor driving method, the detection of the printing paper sheet edge is carried out a plurality of times by a second motor driving method which can achieve a driving step period finer than a driving step period of the first motor driving method, which reduces errors in the detection of the printing paper sheet edge and accurately performs positioning of the printing paper sheet.
