PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an organic acid, in which the organic acid can be continuously produced from organic acid salt by using an electrodialysis apparatus while effectively preventing the performance deterioration or destruction of a cation exchange membrane by a hydroxide of a polyvalent cation. SOLUTION: The method for producing the organic acid includes the steps of: using the electrodialysis apparatus; and circularly supplying an aqueous solution of the organic acid salt to salt chambers 17 while supplying power to the electrodialysis apparatus to convert the organic acid salt, which is supplied circularly to salt chambers 17, into the organic acid while producing an alkali in alkali chambers 19. In some of power-supplied salt chambers 17, the circulation of the aqueous solution of the organic acid salt is stopped and an aqueous mineral acid solution is supplied so as to adjust the pH of the liquid in the salt chamber 17 to <1, so that the cation exchange membrane C for forming the salt chamber 17 is cleaned. With the cleaning, in other salt chambers 17, the aqueous solution of the organic acid salt is supplied circularly to convert the organic acid salt continuously into the organic acid.
