Disclosed is a vertically aligned liquid crystal display element (10) which performs display by controlling, in the lateral electric field, the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules (52) contained in a liquid crystal layer (50). A CF side first insulating layer (42a) and a CF side second insulating layer (42b) having different dielectric constants are provided within the pixel region of a CF substrate (24) in planar view such that a first electric field region (60) and a second electric field region (62) having different equipotential line shapes are formed in one pixel when the lateral electric field is generated.
