PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer system which allows garbage collection processing achieving both a high throughput and a short stop time. SOLUTION: It is determined whether or not a program is in a state wherein garbage collection should be executed. When the program is in the state wherein garbage collection should be executed, memory contents used by the program are copied to other processing system, and processing of determining unnecessary memory areas with respect to the copied memory contents is performed in the other processing system in parallel with continuation of processing of the program, and the other processing system transmits the determination result after waiting for a state wherein the determination result should be transmitted, and the program accepts the transmission result to release unnecessary memory areas in memory areas.
