PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of improving character recognition accuracy even relating to image data read without distinction of a type of an original document, to provide an image forming apparatus, to provide an image processing method, to provide a computer program for obtaining the image processing apparatus, and to provide a recording medium which records the computer program. SOLUTION: An original document detecting unit 23 determines the type of the original document by detecting a size of the original document read by an image input device 1 from an image in accordance with image data received by an A/D converter 20 of the image processing apparatus 2. When the determined type of the original document is a normal original document except for a name card (or in a case of the name card), a character recognition unit 31a (or 31b) recognizes characters, then a formatting processing unit 32a (or 32b) produces image data of a PDF format (or vCard data) in which the recognized characters are embedded, then data produced by a transmission reception device 5 is subjected to image transmission into external.
