PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device having a small and simple structure which lights a high pressure discharge lamp using a starting light source. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp lighting device includes a lighting circuit for supplying AC power to the high pressure discharge lamp. The high pressure discharge lamp includes an arc tube, and the starting light source, which is arranged in a periphery of the arc tube and assists starting of the arc tube. The starting light source includes a pair of electrodes, and the electrodes are capacitively-coupled. The lighting circuit includes a bridge for reversing a lamp current, a current restricting part for restricting the lamp current, and an igniter part for generating a starting voltage, and applies a voltage containing a frequency component higher than a lighting frequency in steady lighting of the arc tube on the starting light source in starting.
