PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for drawing an outline of a polygon which does not highlight a map sheet boundary line when highlighting an outline of a polygon in display and can display the outline of the polygon without erasing it in spite of the existence of the outline on the map sheet boundary line. SOLUTION: AT the database compiler side, element points forming the outline of the polygon are selected in order with respect to polygon data taken in from a map database, and when it is detected that a selected polygon element point exists on the map sheet boundary line, the processing of shifting coordinates of the polygon element point inward to the polygon by one point is performed. At the map display processing side, polygon data subjected to this processing is taken in to highlight the polygon in display, and when it is detected with respect to the taken-in polygon data that an outline portion of the polygon exists on the map sheet boundary line, the outline portion is not highlighted but other outline portions are highlighted in display.
