PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material for forming a porous film which enables forming of the porous film showing the high capturing efficiency for a particulate substance even in such a state that the accumulation of this substance is at a low level, and also, a low pressure loss, on the surface of a partition wall of a honeycomb structure-type filter which constitutes an exhaust gas cleaning filter such as DPF. SOLUTION: The coating material for forming the porous film is for forming the porous film having a smaller average pore diameter than the average pore diameter of a porous support, on the surface of the porous support of the honeycomb structure-type filter. The coating material includes at least microparticles containing an oxide and silver, and a dispersion medium. The microparticle has a specific surface of not less than 1 m<SP>2</SP>/g and not more than 125 m<SP>2</SP>/g, a tap bulk density of not less than 0.1 g/cm<SP>3</SP>and not more than 2.0 g/cm<SP>3</SP>, and an average secondary particle diameter of the coating material of not less than 0.1μm and not more than 10μm.
