Provided is a liquid crystal display device which comprises a light source, a light guide plate having a side surface upon which light emitted from the light source is incident and a main surface from which the light is emitted as illumination light, a reflection type color filter having a wavelength selectivity to transmittance and reflectance, and a polarization plate arranged closer to the light guide plate than the reflection type color filter. The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal panel arranged on an optical axis of the illumination light, and a recycling portion which re-reflects the illumination light reflected by the reflection type color filter toward the reflection type color filter. The light emitted from the light source is incident upon the light guide plate as substantially linearly polarized light. The polarization plate of the liquid crystal panel has a transmittance of 90% or more.
