The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system (1) comprising at least one fuel cell (2), wherein a mass flow (10) passes through the fuel cell (2). According to the invention, the method includes a first step for detecting a deviation from a permissible operating range (B), wherein the first step comprises the following individual steps: defining the permissible operating range (B) by associating permissible pressure differences (?P) between a first pressure (P1) of the mass flow (10) upstream of the fuel cell (2) and a second pressure (P2) of the mass flow (10) downstream of the fuel cell (2) with a mass flow value (?) within tolerance limits (B', B"); measuring the first pressure (P1) before the mass flow (10) enters the fuel cell (2) at a point in time; measuring the second pressure (P2) after the mass flow (10) has exited the fuel cell (2) at that point in time; concluding a deviation from the permissible operating range (B) if an operating point (A, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5), characterized by an association of the mass flow value (?) of the, in particular simultaneously, flowing mass flow (1) with a measured pressure difference (?P) between the measured first pressure (P1) and the measured second pressure (P2), is outside of the tolerance limits (B', B") of the permissible operating range (B). The invention further provides that the method includes a second step, wherein a conclusion is drawn from the deviation from the permissible operating range (B) and the fuel cell system (1) is prompted to carry out a corresponding response.
