APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PROCESSING IMAGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method whioch can perform an image edge detection without degrading a compression efficiency and without extending a circuit scale or complicating a processing required for data compression.

SOLUTION: According to an image processing method, image data are divided into a plurality of block units and arbitrary one data item in one block divided is defined as reference data. Differential data between data of blocks are then calculated and an effective digit portion is extracted from the differential data calculated. The reference data and the effective digit portion are next combined and a data length of compressed image data is calculated from the number of digits in the effective digit portion. An image edge is then detected based on a change in the data length calculated.
