A machine for covering an edible centre, e.g. sausage, with an edible coating, e.g. potato; comprises a hopper 10 for the coating, a nozzle 21 attached to the lower portion of the hopper, the nozzle comprising a pair of concentric tubes 27, 33 and the discharge end of the inner tube 33 terminating within the outer tube 27, and a plunger 36 reciprocably mounted in the inner tube to force the centre therefrom. The plunger 36 being retracted to the left, Fig. 4, a sausage 38 is manually inserted into the inner tube (39 is a stick handle). Then a screw impeller 16 disposed at the base of the hopper is turned to force potato through the space between the two tubes and out through the restricted nozzle portion 29 simultaneously plunger 36 is moved to the right to push the sausage out. Fig. 5 shows the sausage half-way out, the portion that has emerged being coated with potato as at 41. Fig. 6 shows the sausage fully out, the nozzle portion 29 being blocked by the piston 36.
