In apparatus for cutting and heat-sealing thermoplastic materials comprising a reciprocatory cutter co-operating with a stationary shearing element and positioned in advance of a heat-sealing element, and a presser foot and feed-plate device for feeding material past the cutter and heat-sealing element, the movement of the feed-plate device and of the reciprocatory cutter is effected by a single crank or eccentric. As shown, a heat-sealing element 15, Fig. 1, in the form of an electricallyheated wire passes through an opening in a bedplate 1, and a cutter 16 co-operating with a stationary blade 19 is adjustably secured to a slide 9 which is reciprocable on a pillar 10 by being pivoted to a connecting-rod 7 passing through an opening in the bed-plate and operated by a crank 6 on a driven shaft 4, the material being fed to the cutter 16 by means of a presser foot 30 co-operating with a serrated feed-plate 11 which is disposed in an aperture 14 in the bed-plate and is fixed to the connecting rod 7 at a point intermediately of its ends. The lower end of the cutter 16 has a rear projection 18, Fig. 3, for guiding its cutting edge relative to the blade 19. The blade 19 is clamped in a slot in a spring-pressed member 21 carried by a fixed holder 20. The presser foot 30 is pivotally mounted on a pillar 31, Fig. 1, and is loaded by a spring-pressed ball 32 or the like held in a projecting part 33 of an arm 34 carrying the presser foot, the arrangement being such that when the presser foot is swung to its operative position over the feed-plate it is located in that position by the engagement of the ball 32 with a recess 35. The apparatus may be used for trimming fabrics before or after sewing to prevent fraying at the cut edges and at the same time, if desired, to unit two or more layers of fabric along the cut edges. The sealed edge may be of scalloped formation.</p> |
