PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems that a conventionally known thickener generally interferes increase in the molecular weight of an aqueous copolymer contained as a component, generates branched structures, and generates insoluble portions, with respect to a strongly acidic solution, a solution having a high salt concentration, or an alcoholic solution, so as not to be sufficiently thicken, to be inferior in handleability, and the like. SOLUTION: An aqueous thickener is obtained by copolymerizing 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (salt) having a 2-methyl-2-propenyl-1-sulfonic acid content of ≤120 wt.ppm, (meth)acrylic acid and/or a salt thereof, and a monofunctional acrylamide or an acrylate whose N atom may be bound with an alkyl group, and has a GPC top peak molecular weight of 2,000,000 to 30,000,000. The obtained aqueous thickener is excellent in thickening strongly acidic solutions, solutions having high salt concentrations, and alcoholic solutions, has good dissolvability without insoluble portions, and is easy to handle, so as to produce an excellent aqueous thickened solution.
