PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader reducing the amount of power consumption. SOLUTION: In groups G1-G6 including a plurality of LEDs, only the groups G3, G4, G6 are turned on successively and the other groups are kept off in the detection of a document size. If the document size is detected at a point in time when, for example, the group G4 is turned on, document size detection operation is completed without turning on the group G6, thus reducing the amount of power consumption in the detection of the document size.
