PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a recording parameter optimal for the maximum likelihood decoding method.

SOLUTION: The reliability ¾Pa-Pb¾-Pstd of the result of maximum likelihood decoding is calculated for portions of a signal which correspond to a mark start edge and a mark termination edge of a recording mark and have a high error probability by the maximum likelihood decoding method. The calculation is performed for each combination of a predetermined mark length and a previous space length and combinations of a mark length and a following space length. Based on the result, a recording parameter for optimizing the position of the edge shift is determined. Information is recorded on the basis of the recording parameter determined.
