The stereomicroscope (11) has two observation channels, whose distance defines a stereo basis, a step gap lighting unit (12), a main objective (5) and a tube lens (18) for generating an intermediate image of an object (6). The step gap lighting unit has a deflecting element (7d) for a step gap lighting-optical path, which deflects the optical path onto the object plane over the main objective. The deflecting element is arranged for the step gap lighting-optical path on an axis of the stereo basis.
