Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device which can be produced easily and is capable of achieving a high contrast ratio over a wide viewing angle range. The liquid crystal display device comprises, in the following order: a first polarizer; a first birefringent layer of a second kind (nx < ny = nz); a first ?/4 plate (nx > ny = nz); a liquid crystal cell; a second ?/4 plate, which has an Nz coefficient generally equal to that of the first ?/4 plate; a second birefringent layer of the second kind, which has an Nz coefficient and an in-plane retardation generally equal to those of the first birefringent layer of the second kind; and a second polarizer. The liquid crystal display device comprises at least one birefringent layer of a third kind (nx ~ ny = nz) either between the first birefringent layer of the first kind and the liquid crystal cell and/or between the liquid crystal cell and the second birefringent layer of the first kind. The in-plane slow axis of the first ?/4 plate is at about 45° with respect to the absorption axis of the first polarizer; the in-plane slow axis of the second ?/4 plate is generally orthogonal to the in-plane slow axis of the first ?/4 plate; the absorption axis of the second polarizer is generally orthogonal to the absorption axis of the first polarizer; the in-plane fast axis of the first birefringent layer of the second kind is generally orthogonal to the absorption axis of the first polarizer; and the in-plane fast axis of the second birefringent layer of the second kind is generally orthogonal to the absorption axis of the second polarizer. In the liquid crystal display device, a black display is performed by aligning liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer generally perpendicular to the substrate surface. |
