Esters of polycyclic alcohols are prepared by subjecting esters of the male sexual hormone androsterone to the action of such reducing agents are capable of transforming the keto group into a secondary alcohol group. The reduction may be applied either to the pure esters or to the impure preparations obtained from natural materials, for instance by the method described in Specification 438,515. The preferred reducing agents are catalytically activated hydrogen, or nascent hydrogen. In examples: (1) 3-acetyl-androsterone is reduced by hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst; (2) the phthalic acid ester of the male hormone is hydrogenated in glacial acetic acid solution by hydrogen in the presence of platinum black. Specification 443,463 is referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of (1) the hydrogenation product produced by the action of hydrogen in the presence of platinum black on the monobenzoic acid ester of androsterone; (2) the hydrogenation product produced by the action of hydrogen according to the method of Adams - Schriner on androsterone acetate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specifications 452,447, 455,018, 455,019, and 455,264. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
|
