PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cell capable of restraining charge and discharge characteristics from being deteriorated. SOLUTION: This air cell is provided with an air electrode 1, a metal negative electrode 2, and a hydrophobic nonaqueous electrolyte. Lithium metal is preferably contained in it as the metal negative electrode. Room temperature molten salt having a melting point of not more than 60°C, such as trimethyl-propyl-ammonium-bis(trifluoro-methyl-sulfonyl)imido or the like for example is preferably used for the hydrophobic nonaqueous electrolyte. Since oxygen and moisture are not easily dissolved in the hydrophobic nonaqueous electrolyte, differently from an electrolyte comprising a hydrophilic organic solvent, oxygen and moisture taken in from the air electrode side can be restrained from moving up to the metal negative electrode through the hydrophobic nonaqueous electrolyte, and deterioration of the metal negative electrode can be suppressed.
