A method and an apparatus is disclosed for performing an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) transmission. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) estimates a power headroom based on at least a WTRU maximum transmit power, a power offset value, and a transmit power associated with a random access channel (RACH) preamble. The WTRU further performs an E-DCH transport format combination (E-TFC) selection function based on the estimated power headroom, and performs the E-DCH transmission based on an E-TFC selected using the E-TFC selection function.
