<p>Vulcanized rubber is plasticized for re-use by incorporating with comminuted rubber, e.g. tyre scrap, a solvent comprising heveene and like higher boiling point oils obtained by distilling crude or vulcanized rubber and rectifying the distillate for the removal of its isoprene fraction, the process being carried out at a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to ensure devulcanization. The amount of solvent may be as low as two and a half per cent of the rubber, or sufficiently high to dissolve the rubber completely. In an example, finely comminuted tyre tread is heated to from 120-150 DEG C. with 2 1/2 per cent of the solvent over a period of 12-15 hours. In another example, finely comminuted vulcanized waste is placed in a vessel with 4-5 times its weight of solvent and heated at a temperature not exceeding 150 DEG C. until all the rubber is dissolved. In other examples, the solvent is incorporated with the comminuted rubber in a roller mill.</p> |
