The returning empty device has a pick-up chamber, in which an empty object (10) is arranged, and has a light source (12) which is designed to irradiate an optical radiation (16) for singular illumination of the empty-object. An evaluation device (22) is provided with a light detector (14), by which the optical radiation is received. The evaluation device is designed to analyze the received optical radiation according to predetermined criteria and to provide a corresponding analyzing signal (26). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a returning empty device.
