PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flash butt type butt-welding machine for steel strips, which butt-welding machine can reduce the fractures and defects of welded portions due to unknown reasons, and can avoid the line stop and production troubles in continuous manufacturing facilities of steel strips. SOLUTION: In a flash butt type butt-welding machine arranged in the continuous manufacturing facilities for steel strips, a measuring means 5 such as a laser displacement meter, etc. is mounted on an electrode stand 3 moving toward another electrode stand 2, the electrode stand 2 holding the rear end of a preceding steel strip by clamping it and the electrode stand 3 holding the front end of a following steel strip by clamping it, and continuously detects the variation of the level of the electrode stand 3 moving while performing an arc discharge.
