Typing or subtyping Salmonellabacteria comprises amplifying a nucleic acid fragment comprising the CRISPR1 andor CRISPR2 locus using a set of primers comprising no more than 50 nucleotides, namely a set A comprising a sense primer A1 corresponding to a genomic fragment located in a 1000 base pair region 5'from the CRISPR1 locus and an antisense primer A2 corresponding to a complementrary genomic fragment located 3'from the CRISPR1 locus and 5'from the CRISPR2 locus, a set B comprising a sense primer B1 corresponding to a genomic fragment located 3'from the CRISPR1 locus and 5'from the CRISPR2 locus and an antisense primer B2 corresponding to a complementrary genomic fragment located in a 1000 base pair region 3'from the CRISPR2 locus, or a set C comprising A1 and B2; determining the variable sequence composition of the amplified fragment; and comparing the composition with a reference comprising variable sequence compositions listed in the specification.
